As preparations continue for Basketball ACT’s 75th Anniversary Reunion Dinner on Saturday 13 April 2024 at Canberra Southern Cross Club, and through out the year, we will look back at some of the highlights across the years in a series of timeline snapshots.
Our first snapshot in the series looks at our facilities… and boy oh boy, we have come a long way…!!!
From playing games outside at Manuka Oval to our current home at Belconnen Basketball Stadium, with many games played across many venues and facilities in between, our game is embedded in the history of the Canberra.
Starting in 1950 playing demonstration games on Manuka Oval with YMCA playing the Lithuanians.
Moving forward to 1964 playing indoors at the YMCA on London Circuit. The YMCA had only 1 court and would later be demolished in 2006.
Basketball ACT then made the move to the Canberra Showgrounds (NATEX/EPIC) in 1977. With the rapid grow in the competitions the Canberra Showgrounds housed 3 courts and offices.
Looking forward to the growing future of basketball in the ACT, Belconnen Basketball Stadium was built in 1991. Belconnen Basketball Stadium was a big step for Basketball ACT with 4 courts, 250 seating capacity and offices.
In later years, Belconnen Basketball Stadium expanded to have 4 3×3 outdoor courts and plans to continue to grow.
With our future looking even brighter as we look to expand, it’s time to celebrate 75 years of our game with us…
