National Coaches Conference hits Canberra
Over 250 Australian and International coaches converge in Canberra for the 8th National Coaches Conference.
Widely recognised as one of the founding fathers of the sport of basketball in Australia, Ivor Burge is responsible for bringing the game to our shores in 1928 after returning from the birthplace of basketball, Springfield, Massachusetts (USA).
Among his many achievements Burge was one of four representatives that came together in 1939 in Melbourne with the main objective of establishing a body to control the sport of basketball in Australia – Basketball Australia.
In 1995 the Australian Championship for athletes with an Intellectual Disability was named in his honour.
Without his dedication to the sport, generations of Australia would not have had the opportunity to play basketball in Australia and this recognition is richly deserved.
In the spirit of reconciliation Basketball Australia acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
