Eight years on from the Rollers’ last medal at either a Paralympic Games or IWBF World Championship, the Rollers are entering a new era shaped by a changing of the guard.
This transition has been on full display in Ottawa, where the next generation of Australian wheelchair basketballers are establishing themselves on the global stage.
Leading the charge has been 21-year-old Jaylen Brown, averaging 29.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
Brown’s meteoric rise has become part of the Rollers’ winning formula, most notably witnessed with his 41-point, 10-rebound performance in Australia’s 70-66 quarter-final win over Spain.
Brown’s been fortunate to be mentored by the Rollers’ most seasoned player, Tristan Knowles, who brings years of international experience to a team filled with players hungry to make their own mark.
Knowles, 43, has an extensive record at World Championships and Paralympics, dating back to his debut IWBF World Championship tour two decades ago in 2006.
Across six World Championship campaigns and five Paralympics, Knowles has transitioned from the rising star of Australian wheelchair basketball to the veteran campaigner, guiding Australia’s next generation.
Now, Knowles’ role has evolved as the Rollers sit among the world’s best, with his experience proving pivotal in the Rollers chase for gold in Ottawa.
The passing of the baton began to take shape in 2024, when six members of the squad made their Paralympic debuts in Paris.
Despite leaving Paris without any silverware, the Rollers established the foundations of their future with the then 19-year-old Jaylen Brown showing glimpses of his potential and gaining an early taste of the pressure, intensity and expectations at the international level.
That experience has become an integral part in the Rollers newly found success, with youth shining through in Ottawa.
Combining exuberant youth with hardened experience, Knowles and Brown exemplify the new age of Rollers basketball, as the team shifts its focus to the final stage of the IWBF World Championships.
