The Gangurrus and Wombats have done it again.
For the second consecutive Commonwealth Games, all four 3x3 teams are set to return home from Glasgow with medals after winning two gold, one silver and one bronze.
The medal haul got underway with the Wombats women who bounced back from their semi-final defeat to edge out Canada 19–17. Georgia Munro-Cook continued her outstanding form with 12 points, while young star Ebony Stevenson added five to claim bronze.
Having entered Glasgow determined to go back-to-back after their gold in Birmingham four years ago, the first gold medal of the day came when the Wombats men produced a polished team performance to defend their title with a 19–13 win over England. Offensive weapon Eithen Leard led the way with 10 points, while Tom O'Neill-Thorne was all-around class, finishing with five points, nine rebounds and four key assists.
An unbeaten run deserved a shot at gold, and the Gangurrus men earned exactly that. After storming into the final after dominating the entire campaign, they pushed England until the final seconds before falling 19–17. Jonah Antonio finished with 12 points as Australia added silver to its growing medal tally.
The Gangurrus women fittingly capped a perfect run with a dominant 21–11 victory over Uganda. Despite missing Emma Clarke for the finals, Marena Whittle saved her best performance for last, finishing with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Lara McSpadden added four points and two rebounds to close out their 3x3 campaign in style.
