Australian basketball isn't slowing down any time soon.
July has already seen the Opals win series sweep over China, World Cup bronze medals for the Crocs and Sapphires, the Under-16 National Championships take over Bendigo and the Rollers' strong showing at the Toronto Invitational. Now, the green and gold is on the move again.
This time, we’re headed to Scotland.
From 24–29 July, the Gangurrus and Wombats will chase gold at the Commonwealth Games, looking to build on Birmingham 2022, where all four Australian basketball teams returned home with a medal.
Three-time Commonwealth Games representative Jesse Wagstaff returns after leading the Gangurrus men to silver four years ago. He will be joined by Jonah Antonio, Jarred Bairstow and Samuel McDaniel.
The Gangurrus women, who claimed bronze in Birmingham, are led by recent FIBA 3x3 World Cup silver medallists Marena Whittle, Amy Atwell and Emma Clarke, with Lara McSpadden completing the quartet.
The Wombats return with plenty to defend. Luke Pople is back from the side that won Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham, joined by Eithen Leard, Tom O'Neill-Thorne and Tomas Klein as the men chase back-to-back titles.
Birmingham silver medallist Hannah Dodd leads the Wombats women alongside Georgia Munro-Cook, Taishar Ovens and 16-year-old young gun Ebony Stevenson, with the team aiming to go one better than their runner-up finish four years ago.
