The last time they met

Two years on from a dominant series victory, the Opals and China return to Melbourne to reignite one of international basketball's growing rivalries.

The year was 2024. Taylor Swift's Eras Tour had the world in a frenzy, the Caitlin Clark effect was in full swing, and with Paris2024 just around the corner, Melbourne became the epicentre of basketball for four days and nights.

As part of the Ford Ballin' series, Australia welcomed regional powerhouses China and Japan to John Cain Arena in a landmark event that saw the Boomers, Opals, Gangurrus, Rollers and Gliders all compete under the same roof for the first time.

The Opals, headlined by the likes of Lauren Jackson, Marianna Tolo and Cayla George, produced a commanding two-game sweep over China.

In game one, rising star Isobel Borlase announced herself with a 19-point debut, helping the Opals to a convincing 94-66 victory.

Two nights later, Amy Atwell did what Amy Atwell does, also finishing with a game-high 19points as the Opals completed the clean sweep with a 91-63 victory.

Now, two years later, the friendly rivalry returns to Melbourne, and while plenty has changed, some things remain the same.

Fourth-ranked China returns to Australian soil as one of the world's leading women's basketball nations, providing an invaluable opportunity for both programs as they ramp up preparations for the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup in September.

This year's series also offers fans a glimpse into the future.

Frankston products Bonnie Deas and Sitaya Fagan are set to make their home debuts in green and gold, while China brings its own exciting young talent in 220cm teenage centre Zhang Ziyu. Already making headlines around the world, Zhang has become one of the most talked-about young players in international basketball.

With a World Cup on the horizon, the next chapter in the Australia-China rivalry begins on 7 & 9 July, as the Opals once again welcome China to John Cain Arena.

This is the bit where Melbourne roars. Where winter belongs to the crowd, the clash, the edge-of-your-seat moments you feel in your chest.  It's the scent of fresh coffee drifting out of laneway roasters, the neon-lit glow of hidden bars that feel like secrets, the sudden warmth of a gallery, a gig, a perfectly timed bowl of something slow-cooked and soul-filling. At Melbourne's iconic sporting venues, the atmosphere is everything. It's the shared chants, the collective gasps, the thrill of being part of something bigger than yourself. Come winter in Melbourne, it’s every bit different.
