Australian teams confirmed for Glasgow 2026

Basketball Australia announces Gangurrus and Wombats squads to represent at the Commonwealth Games from 24–29 July.

Basketball Australia alongside Commonwealth Games Australia is today announcing the Australian teams that will compete at the Glasgow 2026 Games from 24 – 29 July.

The 3x3 Gangurrus as well as Wombats wheelchair 3x3 teams will battle against Commonwealth nations in Scotland featuring stars of the format. 

Chef de Mission Petria Thomas OLY said the selected teams reflect the depth and strength of Australian basketball across both programs. 

“These squads reflect the incredible depth, talent and resilience we continue to see across Australian basketball,” Thomas said.  

“It’s particularly exciting to welcome our debutants into the green and gold, while also recognising the outstanding experience of our returning athletes,” Thomas said. 

“I know each of them will embrace the opportunity to represent Australia with pride on the Commonwealth Games stage and continue our strong tradition of performance in these formats.” 

Basketball Australia CEO, Matt Scriven said the selection of the squads reflects the continued growth and strength of the sport in Australia at the elite level. 

“Today’s announcement is another strong demonstration of the depth and talent we have across Australian basketball,” Scriven said. 

“Both our Basketball 3x3 and Wheelchair Basketball 3x3 programs continue to produce athletes who perform on the international stage and embrace the demands of the Commonwealth Games environment. 

“We’re proud of every athlete selected and look forward to watching them represent Australia with distinction in Glasgow.

Leading the prolific Gangurrus 3x3 women, three key cogs of the recent FIBA 3x3 World Cup team have been selected with Marena WhittleAmy Atwell and Emma Clarke chasing Commonwealth glory. Novocastrian and Asia Cup champion Lara McSpadden adds height to the lineup.

Damon Lowery will man the sidelines as Head Coach of the women’s program for another major tournament.

Iconic Perth Wildcats veteran Jesse Wagstaff will don the green and gold in Glasgow for the men. Wagstaff said representing Australia again at a Commonwealth Games remained one of the most significant honours in his career.  

“Every time you get the chance to pull on the green and gold at a Commonwealth Games, it means something very special,” Wagstaff said.

He will team up with Gangurrus men regulars Jonah Antonio and Jarred BairstowSam McDaniel is a massive inclusion after overcoming the injury that affected his availability for the 3x3 World Cup earlier in the year.  

Adam Forde is locked in as head coach to drive the men’s program to Commonwealth Games success.

For the Australian Wombats 3x3 women, an exciting group with dash and tournament experience will suit up. Veterans Hannah Dodd and Georgia Munro-Cook will be flanked by emerging stars Taishar Ovens and Ebony Stevenson. 

The 3x3 Wombats men are led by Paralympians Tom O’Neill-Thorne, Luke Pople and Eithen Leard. The Paris trio is joined by Victoria / Thuringia Bulls gun Tomas Klein.

Pople said the opportunity to return to the Games alongside familiar teammates was something the group had been working toward since their success in Birmingham. 

“Winning gold in 2022 was an incredible moment for us, but we’ve all kept pushing to improve and grow as a group,” Pople said.  

“To have the chance to go again and represent Australia on that stage is something we don’t take for granted, and we’re excited by the challenge ahead in Glasgow.”

Rob Pike will lead the Wombats women’s program as Head Coach with Matt McShane for the men.

The Commonwealth Games campaigns tip off for the Australian 3x3 teams on Friday, 24 July running through to the medal games on 29 July.
