Gliders Show Fight in Tough Loss to China

A determined Gliders side pushed the reigning champions before China steadied late to claim the win.

The Gliders have continued their IWBF Asia–Oceania Championships campaign in Bangkok, going down 32–44 to China.

Australia matched China’s pressure early, staying composed against China before the reigning champions found their rhythm and pushed out to a double-digit lead by halftime.

Despite the late push, China’s experience and composure under pressure proved the difference as they steadied in the final term to secure the win.

Head Coach Craig Campbell said while the result didn’t go their way, the game highlighted the team’s growth and resilience.

“China’s experience really showed, but our group fought hard right to the end,” Campbell said.

“The fact that we’re consistently competing with some of the best teams in the world is a positive sign. We knew where their threats were, and while they capitalised in key moments, we’ve taken plenty of learnings from this one that will make us better moving forward.”

The Gliders will be back on court on Wednesday, 12 November, to face Japan as they continue their push for qualification to the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships.

“With the double round-robin format, we’ve still got every opportunity to finish where we want to be,” Campbell added.

“The players’ attitude and willingness to adapt have been outstanding, and we’ll look to keep building as the tournament goes on.”
