Action continues for Sapphires at U16 Asia Cup in Seremban, Malaysia

The Sapphires are in Malaysia to take on Asia’s best at the U16 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup.

The 2025 FIBA Under-16 Women’s Asia Cup is underway in Seremban, Malaysia, from 22-28 September, with the U16 Sapphires ready to test themselves against the region’s top teams.

The squad features some of the nation’s brightest talents including, Madison Ryan, Daisy Hocking and Queensland duo Olivia Olechnowicz and Isabel Smith. Each impressed at the Footlocker Under-16 National Championships, bringing versatility and resilience that will be crucial against diverse opposition.

Head Coach Tom Garlepp is confident in the squad’s balance and depth.

“All players impressed during our camp in June. We know that at different moments any of the individuals within the group will have their time to contribute to their country, which is the most exciting part of this particular team,” he said.

This adaptability and team-first mentality will be central to the Sapphires’ campaign.

“I think we have some good depth. Especially given the multi-positional talent we have amongst our roster, we feel we can adapt to the toughness, both physically and tactically, this tournament brings,” Garlepp said.

Coach Garlepp noted that the Sapphires will need to be prepared to navigate a variety of challenges throughout the tournament, with each opponent bringing vastly different play styles and structures.

"We will be aiming to be ready for whatever comes our way in the tough Asia competition,” Garlepp said.

“When we face the inevitable pressure of this tournament we will be looking to stay together, present, and focus on the things that are our strengths.”
