Emus soar into Quarter-Finals after high-scoring thriller

Australia outguns the Dominican Republic in a 106–96 shootout to reach their first quarters since 2015.

The Emus have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2025 after a thrilling 106–96 victory over the Dominican Republic in the Round of 16.

This marks Australia's first quarter-final appearance since 2015.

In the upcoming quarter-final, Australia will face Germany, after they defeated Serbia 92–83 in their Round of 16 match.

Australia and Germany have faced each other three times in FIBA youth competitions, with Australia winning two of those encounters. 

Round of 16 Recap: Australia vs. Dominican Republic

The Emus showcased their offensive prowess, building a commanding 21-point lead. However, the Dominican Republic mounted a comeback, narrowing the gap before Australia secured the win.

Jacob Furphy led the scoring with 24 points, including five three-pointers, while Jack Whitbourn contributed a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Quarter-Final Preview: Australia vs. Germany

Australia's next challenge is against Germany, a team that has demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the tournament. Germany's Hannes Steinbach recorded 23 points and 19 rebounds in their victory over Serbia, while point guard Christian Anderson added 12 assists. 

The Emus will rely on their key players to counter Germany's strengths. Jacob Furphy and Roman Siulepa have been instrumental, averaging 20.3 and 20.0 points per game, respectively.

Siulepa also leads the team with 11.0 rebounds per game, while Dash Daniels is averaging 3.7 assists per game.
