Basketball Australia’s Community Coach Mentoring Program (CCMP) has kicked off its third year with overwhelming enthusiasm from the basketball community, showcasing the growing appetite for professional development and mentorship in the sport.
The program, designed to foster the next generation of coaching talent, received over 330 expressions of interest from aspiring mentees and 90 applications from experienced coaches eager to serve as mentors. From this pool, 45 mentees (25 male and 20 female) and 15 mentors (11 male and 4 female) were carefully selected to participate in the program’s latest iteration.
The CCMP is a cornerstone initiative by Basketball Australia, aimed at bridging the gap between grassroots and high-performance coaching. It provides mentees with the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced and respected figures in Australian basketball, while mentors contribute to the growth of the sport by sharing their expertise and insights.
The program emphasizes leadership, technical skills, and the development of a coaching philosophy, all of which are critical for success in the competitive world of basketball.

A Competitive Selection Process
With over 330 expressions of interest from aspiring mentees, the selection process was highly competitive.
The panel was made up of Mentors from previous years, BA Staff and representatives with a DEI Focus. The chosen 45 mentees represent some of the most enthusiastic coaching talent in the country, each demonstrating a commitment to personal growth and a passion for the game.
Similarly, the 15 mentors were selected from a pool of 90 applicants, ensuring that only the most experienced and dedicated coaches were chosen to guide the next generation.
The Impact of the Program
Since its inception, the CCMP has had a profound impact on the Australian basketball landscape. Past participants both as mentees and mentors have gone on to take up coaching roles at various levels, from grassroots clubs to state teams and even national programs.
The program’s emphasis on mentorship and professional development has created a ripple effect, elevating the standard of coaching across the country and, in turn, improving the quality of play at all levels.
As Year 3 of the program gets underway, the basketball community eagerly anticipates the success stories that will emerge from this latest cohort. With such a talented group of mentors and mentees, the future of Australian basketball coaching looks brighter than ever.
