Basketball NSW is thrilled to announce that Suzy Batkovic OLY, one of Australia’s most decorated basketball players, will be officially inducted into the prestigious NSW Hall of Champions at the NSW Champions of Sport Ceremony.
The event will take place on Monday, November 25, at The Star Event Centre in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Batkovic’s storied career is a testament to her extraordinary talent and dedication. A three-time Olympic medallist, with silver medals from the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and a bronze from the 2012 Games, Batkovic has represented Australia on the world stage with distinction. In addition to her Olympic success, she secured a bronze medal at the 2002 FIBA World Championships.
On the international circuit, Batkovic spent seven years in Europe, winning four championships, including the coveted Euroleague title. In the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL), she is a household name, having claimed five WNBL Championships, six MVP awards, and holding the record as the league’s all-time leading scorer. She played for several teams throughout her 16-season career, including the Sydney Uni Flames, Canberra Capitals, Adelaide Lightning, and Townsville Fire. She retired as the all-time leading scorer in league history with 5,839 points, adding 2,972 rebounds, 443 blocks and 423 steals.
Batkovic’s legacy continues to inspire through the Suzy Batkovic Medal, awarded annually to the WNBL’s Most Valuable Player.
Off the court, Batkovic has remained an influential figure in the community and the sport. She was elected as a Townsville City Councillor in 2020, inducted into both the Basketball NSW and Basketball Australia Halls of Fame, and most recently appointed to the Basketball Australia Board in 2023.
The NSW Champions of Sport Ceremony will celebrate the achievements of NSW’s most outstanding athletes, coaches, administrators, and sporting organisations. The night will also see the induction of four other exceptional NSW athletes into the NSW Hall of Champions: Alex Blackwell (Cricket), Murray Braund (Surf Lifesaving), Pattie Dench (Sport Pistol), and Tim Gavin (Rugby Union).
The NSW Hall of Champions, located at Quaycentre in Sydney Olympic Park, serves as a permanent tribute to the greatest athletes in NSW history.
