Aussies face off in WNBA Finals

Minnesota Lynx Forward Alanna Smith and New York Liberty Head Coach Sandy Brondello will now battle for the 2024 WNBA title.

When Paris Olympic bronze medallist Alanna Smith and her Minnesota Lynx advanced to the best-of-five series with a win over Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, the scene was set.

Smith and her team will face New York Liberty, led by Seven Consulting Opals Head Coach Sandy Brondello, in a fascinating series that will decide the 2024 championship.

Smith and Brondello were part of the same Australian team at the Olympics and will now battle for the trophy.

Smith scored seven points, including two triples, in addition to three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal in her team’s 88-77 victory which saw the Lynx take the series 3-2.

The Liberty advanced on Monday after accounting for reigning back-to-back champions Las Vegas Aces, 3-1.

The Finals tip off on Friday morning AEST with the Liberty enjoying home-court advantage.
