The Emus have dominated the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2024, securing a decisive 96-33 win over New Zealand in the Final held at Prince Hamza Hall on Monday night.
Jacob Furphy led the offence with 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Emmett Adair, named Tournament MVP, contributed 19 points and 5 rebounds.
Both players, selected for the All-Star Five, played a crucial role in leading their team to a flawless 6-0 record throughout the six-game tournament.
Additional contributions came from Nash Walker with 12 points, Luke Fennell who added 11 points, and Che Brogan with 10 points, all playing key roles in clinching the championship.
"It shows huge testaments to what Basketball Australia is doing, and the Centre of Excellence as well, which is where I am at the moment,” said Furphy.
“I think that program is really starting to lift and show that we are a basketball nation and I think for our group, we have some really exciting times coming forward."
Australia’s defence stifled New Zealand, limiting them to just 11-of-57 shooting from the floor. The Emus' relentless pressure also forced 19 turnovers, converting them into 33 points.
Head Coach Robbie McKinlay commended the Emus' defensive performance against the Junior Tall Blacks.
"I thought we've tried to establish our defense all tournament, I think we did that again tonight. The boys bought into the scout... New Zealand is one of our rivals, and we knew they were gonna give us everything they have.
"We made some shots early but again, I think it was all behind our defense. We're proud of the boys, they came in and have done a tremendous job coming together as a group, playing together and playing the right way."
This victory marks a return to the top for the program, which last secured the gold during their debut in 2018—against the same team.
Australia, New Zealand, China, and Jordan will represent Asia in the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup next year in Switzerland.
