The 3x3 Wombats have made a strong start to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) 3x3 Asia Oceania Cup, dominating five out of six games on day one.
The Men finished up the night with a 3-0 record against Saudi Arabia, The Philippines, and a notably promising win over a strong Chinese team. This places them at the top of Pool B and sets up a potential semi-final clash with Korea if both win their quarterfinals tonight.
Men’s 3x3 Head Coach Nick Such emphasised that the team's aggressive play and defensive pressure was instrumental in leading them to more offensive possessions, and ultimately coming out on top.
Game one for the women marked their first international appearance together, with all four players making their debut in the 3x3 format.
After a rocky start going down to Cambodia, the women dialled in the defensive structure to give the team more intensity on offence and create better offensive opportunities in their wins against Thailand and India.
Despite their initial setback in game one, finishing second in their pool positions the Women well for a strong chance at reaching the semi-finals.
Women’s Head Coach Rob Pike praised the team’s on-court pressure and determination to consistently improve.
“The Wombat ladies are excited for the opportunity to play in the quarterfinals and get through to the medal rounds.
“There is positive energy amongst the team and that shows every time we hit the court, we improve, and the longer we stay in the competition, the more dangerous we become to our opponents.”
